Not by Might !

Lord 'Gospelize' Africa

 Lord !  ‘Gospelize’ Africa

I love being a dad ! When I pick something up very heavy my son (Caleb) says; “wow dad, you are the strongest in the world”. My daughter (Gaby) is filled with such pride for her dad because he is the strongest dad in the world. I love this! So in recent weeks a verse which I have heard a hundred times is jumping out at me in these last few days and speaks about might, so I decided to research this amazing verse and book. This was one of Jesus’ major priorities (trusting the Spirit of God)

 Zechariah 4:6-7New International Version (NIV)

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.

“What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

  • Sometimes we need a word from the Lord especially for those in ministry. It may seem like we don’t get thanked for our efforts or all the giving we do or others don’t appreciate the same burden for passion for the lost and disciple making. So in a sense this is a huge encouragement for Zerubbabel
  • Zerubbabel ( an ancient Babylonian style name) needed a word of encouragement from the Lord: Zerubbabel was the civic leader of Jerusalem, and had the responsibility to finish the work of rebuilding the temple. The work had stalled, and Zerubbabel needed encouragement to carry on the work.
  • Let me disect this further for you as we read this text:

‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts: So it is definitely not the might of Donovan Olding or as this is referring to the collective strength or the resources of a group or army.

  • Power focuses on individual strength. God says, “not by the resources of many or one, but by My Spirit. It will not be by your cleverness, your ability, or your physical strength that the temple will be rebuilt, but by the Spirit of God.”

At times in ministry or leading a movement or a church or business we feel that we need to trust in our own strength, our own abilities or even our physical strength, or even charm, or personality. I have to simply trust and put my ability and gifting aside and trust the Spirit of the living God. When we trust in our own resources – then we don’t enjoy the fullness of the Spirit. He can reveal his purpose and strength to us, and I think of Peter in Acts 4:13 ” when they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. This verse is really becoming more and more my favorite verse in Scripture. There is so much truth to this.

“Oh! May God send us poverty; may God send us lack of means, and take away our power of speech if it must be, and help us only to stammer, if we may only thus get the blessing. Oh! I rave to be useful to souls, and all the rest may go where it will.” (Spurgeon)

This was the Spirit – the breath – the ruah of the Lord which worked in creation (Genesis 1:2), at the Red Sea, to open and close it (Exodus 15:810) and that gave life to dead bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14). We have this same Spirit if you are a follower of the Way!

“What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

  1. What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground! The work of rebuilding the temple was so massive it seemed like a great mountain. Here God promises that by His Spirit, that great mountain will be leveled into a plain.
  2. In this case, the great mountain may have literally been the mountainous pile of rubble at the temple site. That rubble would be removed and the work carried on.

What is your mountain? What are you facing? Entrust the mountain to the Spirit of God and let he guide you and he will make that mountain like level ground.

Ministry Front

We have recently had a team from Texas Elmont Baptist church join us on mission, and the theme was finding the real Jesus. They were an absolute blessing to our ministry and the folks they worked with. They got to experience various ministry opportunities with the ministry of Go-Live-Dare. Here are a few pictures.
